CLIMATE CHANGE AND CONFLICT

Climate change has the tendency to increase the rate of conflict in war-prone regions, leading to an increase in death rate and adverse effect on already crumbling economies, according to the recent IMF report. Each year, the world bank reviews a list of countries classified as “fragile and conflict afflicted states”, numbered 39 with 21 of these countries in Africa. The recent report covers all 61 countries that have been listed since 2006 till date.
It is evident that climate reactions do not only cause conflict but also worsen current disputes and increase other underlying global conditions such as poverty, hunger, and low quality education. African leaders have asked for aid from richer economies to help build a resilient economy against climate shocks.
